Pasadena Museum of California Art: Homegrown Treasures

Founded in 1999 by local art lovers Bob and Arlene Oltman, the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) is dedicated to the exhibition of California art, architecture, and design from 1850 to the present. Informed by the state's rich mixture of cultures and inspired by its impressive geography, California art has long been defined by a spirit of freedom and experimentation. PMCA exhibitions and educational programs explore California’s unique influences and cultural dynamics, which continue to shape art worldwide. The Museum’s 30,000 square foot building, open since 2002, is a masterwork in itself. At $7 for adults and $5 for students/seniors, the PMCA is an unparalleled introduction to the Golden State’s forward-looking, ever-changing artistic vision.

The PMCA is open Wednesday – Sunday, 12 – 5 p.m. If you attend the Pacific Asia Museum on the same day, you’ll receive a 50% discount at the second museum.

Old Pasadena Food Tour: Experience a True Melting Pot

The best way to know a community’s heart? Through its food, naturally. Navigate Pasadena’s oldest nooks and crannies with sister team Diane and Lisa Scalia, who’ll introduce you to spectacular ethnic eateries and sweetstuff havens. Tastings include an authentic Mexican tortas cafe, a sunlit Asian Fusion restaurant, and an exquisite chocolate shop. You’ll also experience local olive oils, tea, and even visit a handmade soap kitchen. (Yes, that’s soap. You can’t eat it, but the scents will bowl you over.) This tour is a feast for all five senses—your belly will be full, and you’ll come away with a new appreciation for the flavors, textures, and people of your home city.

Tours occur Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. The food is equivalent to a full meal, and all-inclusive tickets are $53 for adults, $28 for kids ages 5 – 12. Reservations can be made on the website or by calling (800) 979-3370. Also be sure to check out Diane and Lisa’s tours of downtown LA!

King Larry

Come and enjoy a book signing for James D. Scurlock's new biography, King Larry.

When: March 20th, 2012 @ 7:00 P.M.
Where: Vroman's Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101

"Mr. Scurlock has returned with a story that is everything I enjoy in a book: strange, exotic, inspiring, extensively researched, clearly written and, yeah, sort of creepy…this is a sharp, smart book, and a fast, easy read." -The New York Times

"…a fun, trashy analog to Walter Isaacson's 'Steve Jobs'…Scurlock's enthusiasm is infectious…a naturally funny writer…" – Businessweek

"…Scurlock has again hit upon a story that was crying out to be told…a satisfyingly salacious business book." – Fortune Magazine

King Larry: The Life and Ruins of a Billionaire Genius Before computers and the internet made us neighbors of people across the globe, DHL led globalization by revolutionizing international shipping. Co-founding DHL in 1969 (three years before FedEx), Larry Hillblom turned international shipping into big business, toppling centuries-old postal monopolies. Instead of reveling in his accomplishments and wealth, Hillblom defied the world and became an international pariah retreating to a small tax haven in the Western Pacific. Eventually Hillblom's amoral, thrill-seeking nature caught up to him when his seaplane disappeared off the coast of Anatahan, leaving behind an estate worth billions and an international fiasco that's still unraveling today.

Norton Simon Museum: A Showcase of One Man’s Passion For Art

Don’t know Norton Simon? He was the man behind Hunt’s Ketchup, Max Factor Cosmetics, Avis Car Rental, and the Saturday Evening Post, to name a few of his interests. Business made him a tidy living to say the least, and much of his money was spent accumulating one of the world’s largest and most remarkable private art collections. His namesake museum houses seven centuries of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century, including famous works by Raphael, Botticelli, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Goya. Particularly celebrated are Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings by Monet, Degas, van Gogh, and Cézanne, as well as 20th century works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, and Moore. The Museum also houses a world-class collection of Indian and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Check the website for information on educational programs and an extensive series of live events.

The Norton Simon Museum is open every day except Tuesday. Hours are 12 – 6pm, except on Fridays when the museum is open from 12 – 9 p.m. Admission: Adults, $10; Seniors (62+) $5; under 18, students, and members are admitted for free.
