The large variety of entree options include noodle, rice, and curry dishes along with favorites like Mongolian Beef, Orange Tofu, Garlic Shrimp, and Secret Spice Fish. Authentic dessert offerings include sticky rice with mango, fried banana, and thai tea ice cream.

Magnolia Lounge: Dine in the New Jazz Age

A speakeasy opened on this spot in 1926, a dark, swinging hideaway for rich men and fast women who came up from Hollywood to play. More than eighty years later, it’s been reborn as a candlelit lounge for hill-dwelling hipsters, nostalgia junkies, and the people who love them. A tree stands in the middle of the indoor-outdoor space, which is a mixture of classic roué elements (lilies, velvet-flocked maroon wallpaper), and 60s chic (plastic chairs). The menu is limited but big on comfort: edamame with salt, sesame seeds, or chile; a giant cheeseburger with sauteed onions; mac and cheese with a sourdough crust served in a crock . . . it’s all excellent, and with so many top-notch by-the-glass wines you’ll need to steady yourself with food.

Green Street Restaurant: Comfort Food, All Day

Green Street Restaurant exemplifies California-style dining. Since 1979 Pasadenans in the know have been met at this bright, unfussy bistro for every meal of the day. It’s like having wait staff in the town square: hordes of families, business lunchers and Lake Avenue shoppers regularly fill the large dining room and patio, relaxing among the blonde wood accents and watercolors. The comfort-heavy menu is reasonably priced (mostly $10-$13), and ranges from breakfast burritos and veggie scrambles to burgers and a generous chicken club. The highlight, though, is the salad selection, each made to order and served with thick slices of homemade zucchini bread. Service is quick and always with a smile. Our only complaint is the coffee, which is a bit weak, especially for $3.25.

There’s a full bar, and online reservations are available. Green Street Restaurant is open every day; check the website for hours.
